How to Use Let’s Go Geography: Grades K-2
Everything you need for Grades K-2 is included in the curriculum. This means you get the flags, maps, photos, video clips, coloring, & craft for each week. Plus a flag-themed “notebooking” (journaling) page, if you’d like your student to write a sentence or two about what they learned.
It’s all there in the lesson.
Of course, there are optional things you could choose to have on the side. The Geography Passport is a very inexpensive download, and that is highly recommended. The kids love using these for their flags!
And there is the K-2 Geography Activity Book if you’d like all the printed pages for the entire year in one place. And it does have map worksheets that are not in the curriculum, which is a plus. But it is not required to successfully use and enjoy Let’s Go Geography with the younger grades.
How To Use Let’s Go Geography with Older Students
But what about the same geography curriculum for older students?
Grades 3-5 AND 6-8 use the same curriculum, but they have their own age-appropriate activities outside of the coloring and crafts that the younger ones enjoy.
When the little ones branch off to do their coloring & crafts, the older ones turn to their journals.
How to Use Let’s Go Geography: Grades 3-5
Grades 3-5 have a whole Continent Map Workbook. Even though all grades have continent maps in the curriculum, this book goes beyond the audible questions given there. It not only gives you a place for the student to write answers down, but it also gives more in-depth questions and exploration activities.
So that’s a plus!
But the heart of the activities for Grades 3-5 is the journaling. They have their own Geography Journal, with a 2-page spread of decorated pages for each country in the curriculum.
How to Use Let’s Go Geography: Grades 6-8
Grades 6-8 have their own journals, but with a twist. Their Continents, Countries, & Cultures have journal pages that are more detailed in general. And while Grades 3-5 could fill theirs out with just the information found in the lesson, Grades 6-8 are required to research in an outside resource. They can use an atlas, the internet, or some other source to dig deeper for each country.
And then Grades 6-8 also have COUNTRY maps in their book, too. No other grade level has these! The country maps in Continents, Countries, & Cultures zero in on each country with questions that focus in and around that particular place.
One Curriculum, Multiple Grades
There you have it! If you homeschool, everyone can do the heart of the lesson together, and then branch off at the end of things, with the younger ones coloring or crafting, while the older ones journal and zero in on their own maps.
In a co-op, a teacher can teach multiple classes, all of different grade levels, and use the same core information for all of them. The teacher would just prepare a craft for the younger ages, and be prepared for class discussion with the older ones.
In any classroom, the flexibility of the curriculum is a big plus. All you need is a device to show the photos and videos to keep interest and engagement high. There’s no room for boredom or disconnect with Let’s Go Geography!
