Why Do Kids Need Geography?
Do kids really need to learn geography in schools or homeschools? After all, there’s so many other things that fill up a school day. It can be hard to get everything done every week, so what is really important? And what is not?
Unfortunately, some do neglect geography. And it seems that Americans are often more guilty than others.
As a result, many American kids are geographically illiterate.
As an American, I wonder if it’s because the US is so big, we tend to just focus on ourselves?
I’m not really sure. What I do know is that in a National Geographic poll of American teens…
• 1/2 couldn’t find New York on a map of the U.S.
• 1/3 couldn’t identify the continent of the Amazon rain forest
• 75% couldn’t find Israel on a map of the Middle East
• 7 in 10 couldn’t find North Korea on a map of Asia
It’s so bad, Jay Leno once did a comedy piece, asking teens on the street questions about geography. It was funny, but sad. These kids had no clue.
And that needs to improve.
